Types of Oral Ulcers:

Any open sore inside the mouth is called a Oral ulcer/ Mouth ulcer.

Oral ulcers are of various types depending upon their underlying causes.

Due to Physical causes:

  1. Biting of cheek and lip.
  2. Denture, Orthodontic braces and during dental treatment.
  3. Improper brushing.

Due to Chemical causes:

  1. Increased intake of acidic food like oranges.
  2. Accidental intake of acidic food.

Due to emotional/biological causes:

  1. Stress.
  2. Existing illness/fever.
  3. Diminished immunity.

These above mentioned causes and its resulting types are general in outlook.

The two most commonly seen ulcers are Apthous ulcer ( Canker sores) and Traumatic ulcers.

I would bet, you would have suffered from ulcers in your mouth sometime in your life. They are one of the most painful and irritating conditions in your mouth. So what are they actually?

Common mouth ulcers are known as apthous ulcer. This is one of the most common type of mouth/oral ulcers.

Causes:

  • Exact cause of apthous ulcer is unknown but certain conditions  associated with apthous ulcer are:
  1. Stress
  2. Loss of sleep
  3. Fever
  4. Illness
  5. Hormonal imbalance
  6. Food allergy
  7. Vitamin B12, C and folic acid deficiency.

Symptoms:

  • Extremely painful situation specially if agitated.
  • Ulcer is white or yellow shaped with red inflamed border.
  • May be associated with fever.
  • Lymph node swelling may also be present.

Treatment:

  • Symptomatic relief is achieved by use of  a topical anaesthetic ointment which also provides a protective barrier against further trauma to the ulcer.
  • Avoid hot and spicy food.
  • Medication to reduce fever and other illness should be taken after consultation with your doctor.
  • In certain acute cases topical corticosteroids may be used.
  • All treatments are geared to provide relief within 24 -120 hrs.

In certain cases, apthous ulcer is know to be recurrent ( Recurrent apthous ulcer). In such cases preventive measures in the form of anti bacterial mouth-rinse, balanced diet and leading a not so stressful life would go a long way in preventing the occurrence of these ulcers.
